Air Pacific Hong Kong to Fiji

AIR PACIFIC, Fiji's national airline, is in negotiation with Hong Kong regarding a new route between Hong Kong and Fiji. If approved, this direct route would capture more of the Asian travel market as well as travellers connecting from UK and Europe. It is hoped that the new schedule would commence by mid 2009, initially with two flights to Fiji a week operating B767-300 aircraft.

Issue of New Fiji Coins

The Reserve Bank of Fiji has launched its new Fiji coinage, to be in circulation from January 13 2009. The old coins will remain in circulation until 31st March 2009, after which they can be exchanged into the new legal tender only at the Reserve Bank of Fiji. By dropping the former 1 cent and 2 cent coins, and changing the size, weight and metallic composition of the remaining coins (5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent and $1), over FJ$8 million is saved.

Airport Reopens in Savusavu

THE airport at the popular Fiji holiday destination of Savusavu is to reopen on Monday 8th December 2008, following a major upgrade to runway and facilities. Costing around FJ$5 million, the upgrade will improve the airport for holidaymakers and business people visiting the region. While the runway was closed during the past four months, tourists were diverted to Labasa airport and transferred by bus to their Savusavu resorts and hotels. THE week long Wasawasa Festival of Oceans in Suva is designed to promote awareness of local artists in Fiji islands. The festival organisers invited international artists to conduct workshops as part of the activities that will end on Saturday 6th December and they have plans on increasing the number of skilled artists in the years ahead. The focus is on supporting and empowering local artists, as well as bringing awareness to Fijians regarding sustainable solutions for Fiji's land and ocean environment.

FIJI's international air carrier Air Pacific Limited has won the coveted annual award for as 'exporter of the year'. The DHL Prime Minister's Exporter of the Year Award presentation night was held at the Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa on Fiji's Coral Coast. A total of 18 awards were presented by acting Prime Minister, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, with the main award going to Air Pacific. Ratu Ganilau commended all applicants and winners, saying that their efforts "go a long way in contributing towards sustainable economic growth for Fiji." Fiji signs Carbon Trading Agreement

Under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Fiji Government has approved for reactivation of Carbon Trading in the Fiji Islands. It will come into effect on Friday, 10th October, which is also Fiji Day. Acting interim Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Filipe Bole, announced that new Carbon Trading regulations will be formulated to be submitted to Cabinet by the middle of 2009.

Air Pacific suspends its Fiji Vancouver route

Air Pacific, Fiji's national airline, is streamlining its flight routes due to increased running costs that are felt by other airlines world-wide. It has decided to suspend flights between Vancouver and Nadi via Honolulu. Canadian travelers to Fiji will be able to fly to Nadi via Los Angeles, the alternative route, with the LAX Vancouver sector covered by Alaska Airlines. Although passengers are no longer able to go via Honolulu on the B737 aircraft, they will be able to enjoy more spacious seating and onboard amenities offered by the Air Pacific 747 aircraft between Los Angeles and Nadi. The Booming Pearl Industry in Fiji Islands

The Pearl Industry in Fiji Islands, notably J Hunter Pearls in Savusavu, is booming, with the pearls being sold to overseas markets. Justin Hunter, owner of J Hunter Pearls, announced that 90 per cent of pearls from his Savusavu farm were snapped up by Japanese buyers in Yokohama recently. The pearls from just the one farm contribute around FJ$5m annually to the Fiji Islands. Annual Fiji Swim from Denarau to Beachcomber Island

Organisers are pleased with the successful completion of the 3rd Annual Fiji Swim event held from 24th to 26th July 2008. Eleven teams and three solo competitors participated in the 18 kilometre relay between Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island. and the Beachcomber Island in the Mamanuca group. Two of the solo competitors were from Fiji. Seven Olympic swimmers took part, including Fiji's Sharon Pickering Smith and Carl Probert, plus Dan Vollmer and Allison Wagner of USA and Murray Rose, Shane Gould and Neil Rogers of Australia.
